But climate change is increasing the variability and intensity of rainfall, significantly increasing the burden on these centralized systems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reflex in technical challenges is often: more technology. More sensors. More data. More control. But when the goal is scalability, applicable to thousands of buildings, complexity often works against you instead of helping you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem arises primarily at the building level. Thousands of roofs collect and simultaneously drain rainwater, causing peak loads in the sewer system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The logical question: how do we solve this in a way that is truly scalable?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer isn't more complexity. The answer is less.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why complexity is harmful<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complex solutions depend on external factors to function properly:&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Energy supply, sensors and software&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Communication and data processing&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Maintenance and specialist knowledge&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every dependency introduces a potential vulnerability. If one link fails, the entire system can be limited or interrupted. This has direct implications for scalability:&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Higher installation and maintenance costs&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Greater operational uncertainty&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Slower implementation&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scalability requires reliability, not complexity<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A solution that works at scale doesn't need to perfectly optimize every technical detail. It should primarily:&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Reliable functioning without continuous intervention&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Be independent of external control&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Can be easily applied to various buildings&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Be economically feasible in broad application&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scale occurs when a solution can spread without adding additional complexity to the existing system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nature as a model<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rainwater management is inherently a distributed process. Rain doesn't fall in a single central location, but simultaneously on thousands of individual roofs. The system is originally:&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Distributed&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Parallel&nbsp;<br>\u2022 Autonomous&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the solution has the same properties, it can scale with the system.
